Between 1941-1945 Cambodia was still under French colonial rule. But France had been overtaken by Germany, and as part of the Axis Powers the colonial power was forced to join the powerful German-Japan Axis plan to take over Southeast Asian region. The situation became complicated for French nationals living in Cambodia. Not only did Cambodian people want to resist the new -and old- French regime but so did some French patriots, too. Jean De La Chazalière, a lieutenant based in Siem Reap, was the first resistant. However,the German-controlled French government called him a traitor.
